A lot of the posts are condensed excerpts from the early draft manuscript of my upcoming book, Designing Usable Business Applications, which I’m hard at work on and which will keep me occupied for the next few months.

The previous few posts have defined and introduced some of the basic concepts and areas that this blog will cover – usability, User-Centered Design, User Experience design, and Information Architecture.

Some of the broad topics I will be addressing over the next few months include:

  • User requirements analysis techniques
  • Information architecture and the conceptual design of an application
  • Domain modelling
  • Psychological factors of human-computer interaction
  • Usability principles
  • Visual design and interaction design
  • GUI controls and how to use them
  • Prototyping
  • Usability testing techniques
  • User-Centered Design processes
  • Communicating requirements, designs, and specifications

I’ll cover each of these topics in depth with a series of posts. However, I will not necessarily cover each topic exclusively and exhaustively, and then move on to the next one. I’m writing and editing the different parts of the book in a non-linear order, and so the order of the posts will be a bit random, but I hope that will make things more interesting too.

However, I will try to ensure that initial posts for a broad topic area introduce the topic and define the basic terminology. Then, in later posts, I’ll try to link back to those introductory posts. Of course, if you want to find all of the posts on a certain topic, then please click on the appropriate link under the “Categories” heading in the sidebar.

And don’t worry – in the final book, everything will be smoothly sequenced in chapters arranged in a logical order!

Thanks for reading, and I welcome any feedback, suggestions, and criticism!

Welcome to Architecting Usability http://architectingusability.com/2011/05/11/welcome-to-architecting-usability-2/ http://architectingusability.com/2011/05/11/welcome-to-architecting-usability-2/#comments Wed, 11 May 2011 12:08:15 +0000 http://architectingusability.com/?p=18 Continue reading ]]> Arrow logoWelcome to Architecting Usability!  This is a new blog that will be devoted to exploring topics in User Experience design, User Interface design, and usability.  If you’re involved in designing and building software applications, whether as a developer, visual designer, interface designer, UX designer, product manager, analyst, or architect, I hope you’ll find the posts to be of value and I hope you’ll join in the discussions!

My name is Kevin Matz, and I’ve recently quit my job to found my own small company, Winchelsea Systems Ltd., specializing in usability and UX design consulting.  The company will also create and market software applications and books.

My first project is a book that I am writing and self-publishing. Titled Designing Usable Business Applications, it is due to be published in August 2011.  As I research and write the book, I will use this blog to record and refine some of my thoughts and ideas. Eventually I hope to post entire draft chapters, and I welcome and encourage any feedback. In the long term, I hope to create a dialogue with like-minded individuals – together, we can create a great resource for usability and UX design professionals!
